Why are there so many pregnancy discrimination claims?

Why are there so many pregnancy discrimination claims?

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2021 | Workplace Discrimination

Pregnancy discrimination affects a lot of mothers-to-be in California. Though several decades have passed since the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, the problem doesn’t seem to be getting any better. In fact, the number of annual pregnancy discrimination claims has remained steady and even risen slightly from what it was 10 years ago.

A lot of researchers say that pregnancy discrimination isn’t actually a worse problem than it used to be. The high number of claims is probably because women are just more likely to file claims than they used to be. Here are some reasons why researchers think that is.

Pregnant women are more advanced in their careers

As women have children later in life than they used to, they are more likely to be advanced in their careers when they become pregnant. This can make discrimination clearer to see. When an entry-level employee is fired or denied a promotion, they might blame their inexperience and not realize that they have been discriminated against.

Many families can’t get by without the mother’s salary

These days, there are more households dependent on two incomes to pay their bills. There are also a lot of households where the mother is the main breadwinner of the family. Those factors can make pregnancy discrimination economically devastating for some families and certainly something that can’t be ignored.

More people are informed about their rights

Awareness of discrimination laws is another major reason why pregnancy discrimination lawsuits may be on the rise. Conversations about workplace discrimination are now more common, and people know what to look for. Employees are more willing to talk about the discrimination that they experienced personally and take action to stop it.
